Ukraine has a solid education system, with a number of universities appearing in the international rankings.

According to QS University Rankings, 6 of Ukrainian universities are in the Top-1000 universities in the world. Two of them are in Kharkiv:
* Karazin Kharkiv National University ranked 511-520 in the world. This is the best University in Ukraine!
* Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute ranked 651-700 in the world. This is the best technical (and third overall) University in Ukraine!
Alternative ranking (Times Higher Education) highlights another technical university in Kharkiv:

Kuznechny, aka Mikhailovsky, bridge (Кузнечный мост, Михайловский мост in Russian) - a now-defunct bridge across the Kharkiv River. It connected Kuznechnaya Street with Mikhailovskaya Street (now Shota Rustaveli Street), which was the reason for the double name of the bridge. The exact dates of the existence of the bridge are unknown, but in 1870 it was already there. It was destroyed between 1938 and 1941, as on the city plan of 1938 it is still there, but on the aerial photograph of 1941 it does not appear.
Since the end of the XIX century the bridge was largely used for the transport of coal from Balashovka to First Kharkiv power plant.

This bridge should not be confused with the Podolsk dam which also was situated nearby.

History
The original bridge was made of wood. At first, coal was brought to the power plant by carts, and later a narrow-gauge railway was laid (as it is also called, a tram-electric locomotive line). The rails of this branch passed closerto the river than Kuznechnaya street, through the yards past the former subway-builders polyclinic, the current 10th school, and to the current territory of the Oblenergo substation.

In 1912, the design of a three-span iron-concrete bridge began, the project was developed by engineers Beggrov and Polyakov (or, possibly, Belyakov). Initially, it was planned to spend 75 thousand rubles on the construction, later the cost increased to 110 thousand.

On June 19, 1912, the Kharkiv River overflowed so much that it flooded the wooden bridge. The movement was restored only in the spring of 1913. At the same time, a decision was made to build a new reinforced concrete bridge, taking part of the funds from the fund for the construction new power plant. The construction of the new bridge was never started until the beginning of the World War I followed by Civil War, during which the power plant went out of order and the need for a bridge, largely used to transport coal to the power plant, disappeared.

During the Civil War, the bridge played an important role in the Kharkiv operation of the Armed Forces of South Russia. Having got off the cars on June 23, 1919 a few kilometers before Osnova station, Drozdovites in the morning of June 24 attacked the positions of the Reds near the station, overturned them, and pursuing the retreating along the railway line to Kharkiv-Levada station, crossed the Kharkiv River along the Kuznechny bridge to the power station and entered the central part of the city along Kuznechnaya Street.

The first power plant in Kharkiv was built in 1897 according to the project of N.N.Savitsky (he also headed the construction) and the professor of the Technological Institute N.P.Klobukov.

History
In the engine room, there were originally 4 steam engines for 100 horsepowers each with a generator for 250-300 kW. Initially, the station generated direct current (DC).
There were 2 water tube boilers in the boiler room. Coal was brought from Balashovka through the Kuznechny Bridge on carts, and then manually fed into the furnaces.
For 10 years after commissioning, a total of 7 units were installed, and thus the total capacity was 1.75 MW.

In 1912, a new one with steam turbine units was built next to the old power plant. Before that, in 1911, a bureau headed by Professor of Kyiv Polytechnic Insitute MA Artemyev was specially created for its design.
The construction of the Kharkiv Central Power Plant (KhCES) was completed just before the start of the I World War in 1914. Two steam turbines with a capacity of 2.5 MW and 4 steam boilers of the Garbe system were mounted on it.

In 1920, a fire broke out at the station, after which the station did not function until reconstruction in 1921-1922. After it, the station began to produce alternating current (AC).

In 1922, an agreement was made with Turkey for the supply of a 5 MW turbine generator. The turbogenerator was previously in use in Istanbul. In 1923, it was delivered and assembled at the KhCES, and was launched in 1924. Since the generator was supplied from Turkey, it received the name "Turkish Lady" (Турчанка in Russian). There is information that the generator did not have declared power output and instead of 5 MW it produced only 3 MW, and did not hold steam.

In 1927-1928, two turbine generators of the German manufacturer BBC were supplied, and the "Turkish Lady" was dismantled.

In 1933, there was an accident at the station, the newspaper "Visti VUTsVK" reported on measures to eliminate it.
<br clear=all>
In the autumn of 1941, during the retreat from Kharkiv, Soviet troops destroyed the equipment of the power plant. During the occupation, the Germans installed new equipment with transformers.
During the retreat in February 1943, the Soviet underground prevented an attempt by the Germans to destroy the boilers of the power plant:

{{Quote|text=Further activities of the energy underground continued at the city power plant at 1 Kuznechnaya street that ended up with saving from blowing up all 12 boilers. The rest of the members of the watch, including the author of these lines, crossed the Kharkiv river in the darkness and hid in the ruins of houses on the Rustaveli street.

In 1933, there was an accident at the station, the newspaper "Visti VUTsVK" [1] reported on measures to eliminate it.
<br clear=all>
In the autumn of 1941, during the retreat from Kharkiv, Soviet troops destroyed the equipment of the power plant.

During the retreat of the Germans in February 1943, a group of underground workers entered into a fight with the guards of the power plant, steamed up the passages between the copts, preventing the demolitionist with dynamite from reaching the boilers. The hero of this operation, the surveyor N.I. Dmitriev, was shot dead by the fleeing Germans when he left through the checkpoint. The rest of the members of the watch, including the author of these lines, crossed the Kharkiv river in the darkness and hid in the ruins of houses on the Rustaveli street. The Germans fired on us, but, fortunately, no one was hurt. In honor of the heroes of the underground, memorial plaques were installed on houses at 2 Kuznechny lane, and on 5 Vorobieva street.

In 1933, there was an accident at the station, the newspaper "Visti VUTsVK" [1] reported on measures to eliminate it.
<br clear=all>
In the autumn of 1941, during the retreat from Kharkiv, Soviet troops destroyed the equipment of the power plant. During the occupation, the Germans installed new equipment with transformers.
During the retreat in February 1943, the Soviet underground prevented an attempt by the Germans to destroy the boilers of the power plant:

{{Quote|text=Further activities of the energy underground continued at the city power plant No. 1 on the street. Forge, which ended with the rescue from undermining all 12 boilers.
